Today’s Botox Can Serve Medical Purposes

Woman receiving Botox in Chicago. Botox in Chicago is a popular cosmetic treatment to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but did you know it also offers medical benefits? Believe it or not, the injections are successful in treating a variety of issues, such as chronic migraines, overactive bladder, and excessive underarm sweating. Here’s how Botox can be used for medical purposes to improve a patient’s quality of life.

What is Botox?

Botox is derived from C. botulinum bacteria, which is found in a variety of natural settings, like soil and lakes. If the bacteria produce Botulinum toxin, it can create a deadly neurotoxin; however, when used for cosmetic and medical reasons, it is relatively harmless. The FDA-approved injections can temporarily paralyze muscles, which can aid patients who have certain nerve or muscle disorders.

How It Works?

Botox targets the nervous system to cause a disruption in the nerve signaling process that is responsible for muscle contractions. The injections prevent the release of acetylcholine to prevent the muscles from contracting, allowing them to be more flexible.

The History and Medical Applications

Although Botox has only risen in popularity for medical purposes in recent years, it has a rather extensive history. It was first discovered by a Belgian scientist following a botulism outbreak in the 1920s. It took scientists 20 years to isolate the botulinum toxin in crystalline form.

During the 1970s, Botox emerged in the medical community to treat crossed eyes. While testing the treatment in monkeys, they discovered it can reduce the visibility of wrinkles between the eyebrows and the nose. This led to the FDA approving the injections to be used for a variety of applications over the years, including:

  • Chronic migraines
  • Overactive bladder
  • Excessive underarm sweating
  • Crooked eyes
  • Eyelid muscle spasms
  • Cervical dystonia
  • Upper limb spasticity

Botox also has many “off-label” uses, which means the FDA hasn’t yet approved it to treat the conditions; however, the injections have clinical success when used to manage:

  • Voice disorders
  • Temporomandibular joint disorders
  • Teeth grinding
  • Facial tics
  • Headaches

Although they have yet to earn the FDA’s approval, it is legal and common for Botox to be used for off-label purposes. Since the safety and effectiveness haven’t been fully proven, it’s best to speak with your healthcare professional about any potentially adverse complications or risks.
